1.) Market your goods. In other words, sell your unused items. Even though you no longer have use for an item, it does not diminish its value to someone else. This is the top way to make money off your clutter. When my kids were little, I would sell all of their used clothing to thrift and consignment shops. I’ve also done this with my maternity wear and women’s clothing, along with costumes. Unused video games, video game consoles, electronics, CDs, and DVDs also get sold at my house. As the weather warms up, it’s easy to sell unused items through garage sales and flea markets. Local classifieds, Craig’s List, and eBay are all good ways to market your items for sale. Look for online local groups (Facebook is a good source) that allow you to market items for free.
2.) Help others while helping yourself. When you donate your unused items, not only do you help the charitable organizations that you give your items to, you can benefit as well. Monetary and merchandise donations to non-profit organizations qualify you for a tax deduction if you file a tax form 1040 and itemize deductions on a Schedule A form. These deductions can help to reduce your tax bill. When you donate your unwanted items, make sure they are in good, useable condition, and don’t forget to ask for a receipt to document your donation. On that receipt, you will need to record what you donated and the fair-market value for each item. Then you can use that receipt to calculate your deduction when you complete your income tax return, saving you money.
3.) Stop wasting what you have. For those prone to clutter, it can be a costly problem. If you buy items and are unable to locate them, you may go out and purchase additional items. If your food products are disorganized, they may go to waste if they become stale or rotten before you find them again. By decluttering and organizing your home, you will make it easier to see and access what you have. Instead of purchasing the same product 3 times because you cannot find the ones that you have, you will be able to use what you actually have before you waste money buying more. I try to make it a habit to always check my home inventory before I go out to purchase anything, whether it is clothing, light bulbs, or groceries. You can also save money by reusing your items. Instead of pitching my used printer cartridges, I take them to Cartridge World to be refilled, which saves me cash.
